Uncompromising contrast, extreme sharpness, and extended spectral sensitivity. Rollei Retro 400S is a high-speed panchromatic black-and-white negative film built on a dimensionally stable, clear polyester base.

Originally derived from high-resolution aerial surveillance stock (Agfa Aviphot Pan 400), this emulsion is renowned for deep, ink-black shadows, brilliant highlights, and remarkable resolving power. With spectral sensitivity extending into the near-infrared range (up to 750nm), it offers a dramatic, graphic look that stands far apart from conventional street films.

The Highlights

  • Extended Near-Infrared Sensitivity: Sensitive up to 750nm, allowing you to use dark red or dedicated infrared filters (such as an R72) to capture surreal "Wood effect" foliage and stark, ink-black skies.

  • Punchy, High-Contrast Rendering: Delivers crisp, biting contrast right out of the tank, with deep shadows and clean, punchy highlights ideal for minimalist architecture and stark street scenes.

  • Crystal-Clear Synthetic Base: Coated onto an anti-static, crystal-clear polyester base that dries exceptionally flat, making it a joy to scan with modern flatbed or digital camera scanning rigs.

  • Ultra-Fine Grain for an ISO 400: Thanks to its aerial photography pedigree, the grain structure is remarkably tight and fine for a 400-speed emulsion, preserving incredible edge detail.
